Day Tripping – Day Trip to Harewood House
My gran has a friend who lives just next to Harewood House and she used to take us to visit her when we were young. I have never been to the actual Harewood House though, so a day trip to Harewood House was a great adventure for both Holly AND me! It’s also one of the gardens that you can get discounted entry to with the Gardeners World 2 for 1 card.
There is so much to do at Harewood House. Aside from the Georgian country house, there are stunning gardens, a bird garden, small petting farm, adventure playground and lake with swans, ducks and other waterfowl. A chain ferry takes you across the lake to another garden with chickens and goats.
We started out our day by crashing our car into a log. Luckily it wasn’t damaged! As we’d arrived at lunchtime, we went for lunch in the Terrace cafe, a lovely little cafe with views over the simply stunning terraced gardens. We had to go inside though as the wasps were a real nuisance!
After lunch we wandered through the gardens and down to the bird garden. We saw the farm animals too, including alpacas and donkeys.
Unfortunately for me, I didn’t check the weather before we set off and wore a lovely white summer dress. It rained as we were walking around the bird garden so we had to take shelter in the Courtyard cafe.
We had an ice cream pit stop then Holly decided she had had enough and wanted to go home. Hardly surprising, we’d walked miles! On the way back to the car we stopped off at the second hand bookshop for a browse. Holly chose The Worst Witch All At Sea. She read the book all the way home!
We’ll definitely return to Harewood House. It’s a brilliant place for a day trip.
