Victorian Hallway Makeover - Life with Holly

Victorian Hallway Makeover – Before and (partial) After!

Do you remember our grotty hallway? If not, here’s a shot of it in all its horrible glory. Think manky carpet, smoke damaged walls and a general layer of grubbiness built up over goodness knows how many years! This is it before our Victorian hallway makeover…

This was the mood board for the hallway. I wanted to keep it light and airy while letting the period features shine, as they’re the whole reason we bought the house.

After pulling up the manky carpet, we sanded the floorboards (you can read about that “experience” here) then got to work choosing paint colours. After much deliberation we decided on Cornforth White by Farrow and Ball. It’s a beautiful shade of grey which sets off the woodwork and cornicing nicely.

I just needed to get the paint on the walls!

As I don’t have an extendable roller, my top tip for DIY would be to get a mop handle and sellotape. A lot of sellotape. Works a treat! I can reach up into all those awkward spots and get the whole job done.

I love how it turned out! Now we just have to change the stair runner to a grey or at least monochrome one, but I’ve not had time to look yet. I also have plans for a bespoke console table to go over the radiator and disguise it a little. It’s huge though! The skirting boards are high so the radiator has been hung on the wall higher than normal. A standard console table wouldn’t cover it. How annoying?

Our hallway runner is from H&M and, whilst I love all their homeware, I’m not sure about this runner in this hallway. I may change it but this will do for now!

Do you know of anywhere I could get a cheap and amazing cast iron radiator? Ultimately I want to replace this horrid modern one.
