Easy Witch Hat Cupcakes for Halloween

If you’re looking for an easy Halloween cupcake recipe this year, why not try these witch hat cupcakes? The cupcakes can be any flavour you like (I used my easy vanilla cupcakes recipe) and you can add colouring to make them extra Halloween-y.

Halloween tends to get bigger and bigger every year, and if you’re anything like me you want to create some Halloween treats that look great but don’t take an age to prepare. This year I’ve got a million and one other Halloween jobs to get done, including the dreaded pumpkin carving (the mess – eugh!), decorating the house, finding or making Holly’s Halloween costume etc etc etc and on into infinity, so my time for baking Halloween treats is limited. As well as making things like these easy no-bake Oreo Mummies or no-bake Oreo Spider treats, I also like to make Halloween cupcakes because they can be made at the last minute and don’t take much time to prepare.

To save time, I make the witches hat cupcake toppers in advance and then add them to the cupcakes when I can be bothered to bake them.

Here’s how to make some easy witch hat cupcakes toppers from fondant.

Witch Hat Cupcake Toppers

Makes 6

You will need:

• 150 grams of black fondant
• 25 grams of yellow fondant
• Small knife
• 2 inch circle cutter (or thereabouts, anything around that size will do)
• Rolling pin (I used a small sugarcraft one but any will do)
• Icing sugar (to dust your work surface and stop the fondant sticking, because it’s infuriating when it does! Use greaseproof paper if you don’t have any icing sugar).
• Small amount of cooled boiled water
• Small paintbrush

To make the Witches Hat Cupcake Toppers:

Roll out your fondant to approximately 5 millimetres.

Cut out a circle using your circle cutter and set aside.

Using 9 grams of black fondant, create a cone shape. Start with a ball, then gradually roll one end between your fingers to create the cone.

Stick the cone to the circle with some cooled boiled water. Gently tweak the pointy end so it has a bit of movement to it.

Take a small amount of black fondant and roll into a sausage approximately 5 millimetres in diameter. Wrap this around the join between the cone and the circle to create a hatband and cut to fit, smoothing the join slightly.

Roll the yellow fondant to approximately 5 millimetres thickness. Cut out a square approximately 5 millimetres by 5 millimetres.

Add a tiny dot of black fondant to the middle of the square.

Attach the yellow square to the hat, covering the join in the hatband.

Allow to dry (ideally) before placing on your cupcakes!

I like to make these at least a day before I need them to allow them time to dry. If you add them to buttercream topped cupcakes they may take on some of the moisture from the buttercream and go soft again.

Add extra sprinkles around your witch hat cupcake topper for extra decoration. I used some cute bat ones but any Halloween ones will do!

Pipe a swirl of buttercream for your witch hat to sit on. I went for a black and white theme but you could colour your buttercream in any colour you like!

You can change the colour of the hatband by using different coloured fondant – try purple, orange or green for a traditionally spooky witch hat!
