There is no place better than the Yorkshire coast. Except maybe Negril in Jamaica, but it’s very similar. Usually I make us trek to the coast a few times a year and we always go to Scarborough. This time, however, we took a family day out to Whitby. I suggested it as a day trip as I saw they had a vintage fair on, but didn’t tell Mr R this. I presented the idea in more of a “let’s have a lovely day out” kind of way.
My weather app on my phone told me it was going to be cloudy. Luckily I had put some sun cream on Holly because my weather app LIED. We arrived over the moors to clear blue skies and blazing hot sunshine!
We parked on a side street and walked down into Whitby centre. There were some beautiful old houses on this street. I had serious front door envy.
First stop (always) was some food. As usual, Holly had eaten her massive snack box before we’d even got onto the motorway so was starving. We called into the Marine Hotel for some fish and chips and were able to sit out on the harbour side watching the world go by.
After lunch, Holly wanted to hit the arcades. This is a definite seaside favourite for her – who doesn’t love those 2p shove machines? Alas, she didn’t win anything (thank goodness, I mean!) but she still had fun.
We headed to the beach. As I wasn’t expecting the hot weather, I hadn’t planned for us going on the beach so hadn’t brought towels or swim wear. It seemed like everyone else on the beach though didn’t use my weather app, and were prepared. It was like being abroad!
After the beach we took a boat trip. This was only £3 per person, so a bit of a bargain! We then walked across the bridge and up into the more ancient part of Whitby. We got an ice cream and sat down in a strange dress shop under an old monument/market hall building to eat them. After this we had a wander, but didn’t venture very far. Holly didn’t want to climb the 199 steps and I had sunburned shoulders, so we stopped off at a tea rooms above a jewellers for a quick glass of wine or apple juice.
Then it was time for home! We had an amazing day in Whitby and will definitely be back.
